Lansing’s Bride to Recovery: Restoring Ashe County After Hurricane Helene

When Hurricane Helene tore through the Carolinas, it left a lasting impact on communities throughout Ashe County, NC, especially in and around Lansing. The storm’s heavy rains and flooding caused significant damage to private roads, culverts, and bridges—critical infrastructure for rural residents. For many, the aftermath of the storm made it nearly impossible to access their homes, jobs, and essential services like healthcare.

This devastation led us to help create Lansing's Bridge to Recovery, a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization. Our mission? To restore access to homes by repairing and replacing the private driveways, culverts, and bridges that Hurricane Helene destroyed. We knew that without this effort, many residents would continue to face hardships in their daily lives, cut off from their communities and essential resources.

The Importance of Access in Rural Ashe County

In rural areas like Ashe County, private roads and bridges are lifelines. Unlike public infrastructure, these private access points aren't typically repaired by the government, leaving the responsibility to homeowners. However, the scale of damage caused by Hurricane Helene was overwhelming for many, making it impossible to handle the repairs without external help.

Some residents were left stranded, unable to reach their jobs or receive deliveries of vital medications. For others, even routine tasks like grocery shopping or visiting family became a challenge. The effects of this disruption were felt long after the storm had passed, making it clear that something needed to be done.

How Lansing’s Bridge to Recovery is Making a Difference

Every donation we receive goes directly toward the repairs, whether it’s purchasing materials or coordinating labor. Our volunteers come from all walks of life—neighbors helping neighbors, businesses lending a hand, and people from across the region who believe in the power of community. Together, we are making sure residents can reconnect with their jobs, loved ones, and the outside world.

Progress and What’s Next

Since founding Lansing's Bridge to Recovery, we’ve made progress, but there is still a long road ahead. Many bridges and culverts still need to be replaced, and new challenges continue to arise as we uncover the extent of the damage. Yet, with the support of our volunteers and donors, we’re confident that we can continue rebuilding the infrastructure that is so vital to the people of Lansing and the surrounding Ashe County towns.

How You Can Help

We invite anyone who shares our mission to get involved, whether through volunteering your time, donating materials, or contributing funds. Every effort makes a huge difference in helping residents recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and regain the freedom of mobility that so many of us take for granted.
